Each heartbeat leads Joss closer a shocking truth that will change everything.

Joss Olstad wins the fight to switch from her private school to a public high to “find her pieces” she lost when the Indian artist father she never knew died. There, Joss struggles with a slutty friend, who flirts with her new love; Indian Culture Club girls who press her on her past, as well as her stoner mother’s lies back at home. Armed only with her handmade heart boxes that hold private messages, Joss’s search for identity leads her to a scary industrial section of Queens, and a shocking family secret that changes everything.

***GUEST POST***

Guest Post – Character Spotlight - Joss Olstad – by Catherine Stine

In my new YA romance Heart in a Box, Joss Olstad is seventeen. She grew up in California and moved to NYC with her mom when she was a young teen. She’s pretty, with long dark hair that has an odd blonde streak in it. This could be because her mom is from Sweden and her dad, who she never knew, was from India. All Joss has of his is a hand-painted box covered with delicate rose vines.

She and her mom are close, yet Joss worries about her mom, who smokes weed all of the time, and is terribly addicted to it. Her mom owns an import-export shop, which also sells bongs. Joss works there in the afternoons, and hates selling the bongs because it reminds her of her mom’s issues.

At a new high school, Joss meets the handsome, sexy, and kind Will and she falls for him hard. There’s one problem… no guy is good enough for Joss, according to her mom, and especially not a guy who’s half Puerto Rican. Joss is repulsed by her mom’s couched racism, but there are even more pressing concerns.

In investigating aspects of the family, Joss uncovers a shocking family secret that changes everything. She deals with her anxiety and upset through making heart-boxes, which her artist dad made. Joss never knew him, but this act of creating the boxes helps her feel close to him. She writes little messages in them. Here’s my favorite one:

Lost, frightened and struggling.

You find a celestial map on an invisible highway.

It will lead you back to your truest self.

Making the heart-boxes and writing the messages is also how Joss inches toward finding out this huge family secret, which of course, I won’t reveal here. LOL.

Joss is brave, determined and a true romantic. She’s also an artist. One interesting fact is that I sold my paintings in galleries for years, and I still do illustrations. In fact, the tour prize giveaway includes my hand-painted heart-boxes that I filled with fun treasure and the messages written by Joss. Make sure to enter the rafflecopter to be eligible to win one!

Thanks for letting me guest post,

Hugs, Catherine
